Command Biographies
VMM-266 Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major Valdemar Cambunga Jr.

Sergeant Major Cambunga is a native of California and enlisted in the Marine Corps October 1998 and attended Recruit Training at MCRD San Diego, California.  Upon completion, he received training at Marine Combat Training (MCT), in Camp Pendleton, California.  Following MCT, he reported to Basic Engineer Course, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Sergeant Major Cambunga graduated as the class honor graduate and received a meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal.

In June 1999, Sergeant Major Cambunga reported to 12th Marine Regiment, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. During his tour he participated in various field artillery training exercises on mainland Japan.

In June 2000, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to Marine Wing Support Squadron 373, Miramar, California.  In October 2002 he deployed to Al Jaber Air base, Kuwait and Jalibah, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In January 2004, Sergeant Major Cambunga was ordered to Marine Wing Support Squadron 374, Twenty-nine Palms, California where he was assigned the billet of Platoon Sergeant.  In February of 2004 he deployed to Al Taqqadum, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In September 2005, Sergeant Major Cambunga attended the Engineer Non Commissioned Officers course in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he graduated as the class honor graduate and received the Gung Ho Award.  In February 2006, Sergeant Major Cambunga was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In October 2006, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to Drill Instructor’s School Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California.  He was assigned to Company I and Company M, where he held the billets of drill instructor, Senior drill instructor and Chief drill instructor. 

In April of 2009, he attended the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy at Camp Pendleton, California.  In June of 2009 Sergeant Major Cambunga was transferred to Instructor Staff, Drill Instructor School MCRD San Diego, California.  He was meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in July of 2010.
 
In August of 2010, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to 10th Marine Regiment, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  In October of 2010 he attended Advance course where he graduated as the class honor graduate.  In April of 2012 Sergeant Major Cambunga deployed with 2d Battalion, 10th Marines to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In January of 2014, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to Third Battalion, Sixth Marine Regiment where he served as the Company L First Sergeant.  Once again, he deployed from December of 2014 to July of 2015 on the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit as the vertical assault company First Sergeant.

In August of 2015, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, where he served as the Region 4 (South America) First Sergeant. 

In August of 2018, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to Marine Air Support Squadron One, and served as the Sergeant Major.

In December of 2019, Sergeant Major Cambunga received orders to VMM 266 and is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major. 

Sergeant Major Cambunga’s personal decorations are the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 4 gold stars in lieu of 5th Award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd Award, and the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
