Major Terry A. Carter Jr was born on 26 Nov 1984 in Danville, VA and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. During his tenure, he majored in History with a concentration in British Studies. In tandem with his undergraduate education, he was selected and attended the Platoon Leaders Course, commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in August of 2007 after graduating college.
Shortly after graduating the Basic School, Maj Carter attended Flight School in Pensacola, Florida and was designated as a Naval Aviator in July 2010, slated to fly the CH-46E Sea Knight. Maj Carter began his Fleet Replacement Squadron training with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164 (HMM-T 164) at MCAS Camp Pendleton in the fall of 2010, graduating in the spring of 2011. Maj Carter executed his PCS to Okinawa, Japan and reported to the Dragons of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 (HMM-265) to serve as squadron Adjutant. Shortly after arriving in Okinawa, Maj Carter was sent to Atsugi, Japan to support of the final execution of Operation TOMODACHI in response to tsunami disaster relief. During his time with HMM-265, Maj Carter deployed on the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and supported multiple Bilateral Exercises. In the summer of 2012, HMM-265 “Sundowned” and became the first tiltrotor squadron in Okinawa. Maj Carter executed PCA orders to the Flying Tigers of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (HMM-262) and immediately redeployed on the 31st MEU as a “Phrog” pilot.
In the spring of 2013, Maj Carter was selected for competitive transition to the MV-22B and executed orders to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Training Squadron -204 (VMMT 204). After completing the transition syllabus, Maj Carter was assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 and deployed with the Black Knights to Morón, Spain in support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force- Crisis Response Africa (SPMAGTF-CR-AF). During this deployment, Maj Carter supported two named Operations to include OAKEN LOTUS and UNITED ASSISTANCE, directly supporting Humanitarian Operations in Liberia, West Africa in support of an Ebola outbreak. The following year, his squadron deployed on the 22d MEU and executed combat contingency operations in support of Operation ODYSSEY LIGHTNING. During his time with the Black Knights, Maj Carter served as the Administrative Officer and the Flight Line Division Officer.
In Feb 2017, Maj Carter executed orders to MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay and was assigned to the Red Dragons of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 268 (VMM-268). Maj Carter was assigned as the Quality Assurance Officer and Aircraft Maintenance Officer as his squadron prepped for deployment in support of Marine Rotational Forces-Darwin 2017 (MRF-D). The following year, prior to executing MRF-D 2018, Maj Carter was reassigned duties as the Air Combat Element Executive Officer. Maj Carter has also executed Detachments for Training to South Korea, Republic of the Philippines, and multiple Trans-Pacific flights in the MV-22 while attached to VMM-268.
In July of 2020, Maj Carter executed orders to Jacksonville, North Carolina and was assigned to the Raging Bulls of Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 261 (VMM-261), assuming the billet of Executive Officer.
Maj Carter has successfully executed 5 fleet deployments, to include 3 MEU’s, one SPMAGTF, and Marine Rotational Force - Darwin. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal Gold Star in lieu of second award, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
